Grades 3-6
Learning Objectives:
Students will define four different biomes in the world.
Students will create a painting depicting an animal in its habitat.
Supplies:
- Tempera paint
- Watercolor paper
- Brushes
- Markers
- Scissors and glue
Day 1:
Students choose from four Biomes: Arctic, Forest, Grasslands and Desert.
Students paint background paper with one color from their biome that they choose. They use the colors from their biome and white to create value in the background.
Arctic: blue/purple
Forest: Dark green
Grasslands: light green/yellow
Desert: orange, red
Day 2:
Students choose an animal to draw, cut and glue onto background paper. You can show images of the four animals on the projector screen or print them out for students to trace.
Arctic: owl
Forest: deer
Grasslands: giraffe
Desert: jack rabbit
Students draw, cut and glue their animal onto background paper. Use color pencils to fill in animal.
Day 3:
Students use markers to add more details onto paper. Students can draw details to add more to the painting.
Details to add for each biome:
Arctic: ice, branches, water
Forest: trees, bushes, birds in sky
Grasslands: grass, tree, clouds, sun
Desert: cactus, sand, sun, dirt
