Objective: Students apply knowledge of patterns into paper weaving.

Materials:

  • Pencil

  • colorful paper

  • scissors

  • strips of colorful paper to weave with

First day lesson: Talk about types of patterns. Ask students if they can find any real life patterns in the classroom. Patterns can be found on clothes, shoes, posters, nature and artwork. You can integrate this lesson with patterns in mathematics and science as well.

-fold a normal sheet of paper in half hamburger style

-draw 5-6 straight lines from the FOLDED side to about a half inch from the top

-cut along the lines you drew and open paper

-begin by weaving one paper strip into the cut slits

-weave by going over, under, over, under

-begin the 2nd paper strip by starting the opposite way than the first. For example: If the 1st strip started on top of the first flap, then begin the 2nd strip underneath.

-keep weaving until paper is full of a colorful pattern.
