Texture using brush strokes project based on

ree

van gogh’s art piece "Starry Night”



Learning Goals:

  1. Students will be able to create their own version of Starry night

  2. Students are able to apply knowledge of short brush strokes to their painting

  3. Students can create movement in their art using brush strokes inspired by van gogh

  4. Students will understand tone and tint using white and black paints

  5. Students can use different materials to create their final product



Supplies needed:

-painting paper

-brushes

-paints

-glue

-oil pastels for stars

-sharpies


Process:

Day 1-begin with white and blue paint to create different shades of blue.

-paint short brush strokes across paper to create one layer of the sky

-paint the short strokes going horizontally, a little wavy to create movement

-mix all of blue and white paint together to make a way background

-add black to blue paint to create darker blue color

-paint the large vertical tree on the left side of the painting

-paint the landscape at the bottom ¾ of the painting

-let dry-

Day 2

-mix yellow and orange oil pastels into a flaming circle/star on paper

-cut out 6 stars and glue onto starry night--optional create a moon

-dip qtips into white paint to make dots on paper to create more stars

-optional: draw a small town on gray paper to glue onto art piece



Assessment:

  1. Students have mixed blue and white to create light blue for background

  2. Students mixed black and blue to create dark blue for giant cypress tree and landscape

  3. Students have mixed oil pastels to create stars for the sky

  4. Students have shown excellent craftsmanship in their art
